Joe royer had a vision in the early 1970 s while traveling back and forth between his home in san francisco and where he spent winters as a ski patroller at snowbird utah he saw that the ruby mountains would be a great location for back country skiing and powder. While i would hardly characterize my experience in the rubies via lamoille canyon as uncrowded campground and trailhead parking lot was packed trails very busy the scenery was nearly equal to many national parks yet without the congestion and hubub that so many of them have the hiking here is excellent and i hope to return someday for some overnight backpacking.

This whole area is also a superb location for outdoor pursuits. Apart from lamoille canyon home to the world famous terminal cancer couloir getting deep within the range on foot is problematic. The snow covered mountains in this area of nevada provide the perfect backdrop for a scenic drive with views fit for a postcard. The ruby mountains are flush with wildlife mountain scenery lakes streams and valleys.

There are numerous trails and tracks that head out into the wilderness area of the ruby mountains where the most popular activity is skiing.
